The Psychology of Interior Design in Marketing

Updated: Jun 30, 2023

Colors, shades, angles, and endless designs. Whether you realize it or not, the interior design of a store when you walk in for the first time plays a huge role in your first impression. Although marketing is a very broad subject in business, we will cover a few aspects of interior design in marketing a store.

The main color theme of the store gives off its own specific “vibe” or “feel.” It’s a psychological emotional reaction that occurs to each given color and shade of it. Red standing for anger and irritation, yellow for serenity and joy, blue for grief and sadness, the list is never-ending. Statistics even state that about 62% - 90% of first impressions are made by color.

Your interior design should also cater towards your specific target audience. Between males and females, males are more attracted to blue, black and green shades; Females on the other hand, are attracted to more purple, yellow, and blue shades.

The psychology of individual colors play their own part in attracting different types of products and different people.

Red is noticed more easily, grabbing attention and giving the “LOOK AT ME!” effect. It cues the person to make a quick and easy decision on the product.

Orange and yellow are full of motivated, energetic and bright feels, used mainly by fitness brands for their products.

Green is associated with the feeling of growth and progress, giving a sense of positivity through its color when used on certain products.

Blue is especially known for securing trust and confidentiality, which proves the reason behind why many financial institutions and banks make use of this color. It also resembles the sky and the sea, posing a calm and serene mood.

Black is seen in many luxury stores, showing authority and great strength. It is often used in male clothing stores as well, to show off its masculinity.

Interior design is essential to building first impressions for first time customers to your business. Through designs that use the right color themes, you can market every product by manipulating the minds of the customers into grabbing their attention. Having a thorough understanding of the psychology behind the marketing in your business will help you go to great lengths in the future.
