The “Dupe” Market Expanding

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

There is a widespread definition for the word “dupe”, especially because it comes from the word duplicate. Although this might be true, I speak for most of us when we hear the word “dupe”, we think of a lookalike that is cheaper than the original product. Dupes are created to be listed out as the inferior option for something that is heavily sought after, but too expensive for normal people to buy. These duplicate products aren’t supposed to have the exact logo on the product so it is legal and a valid consideration for buyers on a budget.

A popular business being duped is inevitable but what can they do to battle it? When there's a rise of a new dupe trending, the company might send out more ads to educate the audience why their own product is worth it or they can create a more affordable line. One business used dupes as an advantage to promote their own original product by having a “Dupe Swap”, where Lululemon offered a trade-in where they give out their famous leggings for fake ones, this created buzz and a chance for people to enjoy the product without having to splurge. The creation of dupes will always be harmful to companies, however it's the company's decision on how they can avert the outcome.
